
District Neemuch is situated in the north west border of MadhyaPradesh and south-east of
Rajastan. Broad Gauge railway & road routes are available to reach Neemuch District.
Neemuch has been declared as a seperate district by MP Govt as on 30th June 1998. Earlier it was a part of the Mandsaur district. Three tehsils of undivided Mandsaur district fall under this new district namely
Neemuch, Jawad and Manasa. It lies between the parallels of latitude 240 .15 - 240.35 North, and between the meridians of longitude 740 45 - 750 37 East.
During British rule an army cantonment was established here. After independence, this cantonments has been converted into cantonements of paramilitary forces by the Govt. of India. Presently it is known as
CRPF. Neemuch is also known as birth place of CRPF. Similar to Mandsaur district, Neemuch is also famous for its opium production. It has also a govt. factory know as Govt. Opium & Alkaloid factory under central govt.
History
In 1857 Neemuch was the most southerly place to which the Mutiny extended. A brigade of native Bengal troops were stationed at Neemuch then mutinied and marched to Delhi. European officers took refuge in the fort, and were later besieged by a rebel force from Mandasor. The Europeans defended the city until relieved by the Malwa field force. Since 1895 Neemuch has been the headquarters of the political agent in Malwa.
Geography
Neemuch district is part of Ujjain Division. Neemuch borders the Rajasthan state on the west and north, and by Mandsaur district to the east and south. It was split from Mandsaur District on 30th June 1998.
Geographically Neemuch is divided into three main parts: Neemuch city, Chhavani, and Baghana. Chhavani is the main commercial area of Neemuch hosting Pustak bazar, Satya Path, Tilak Marg, Budha Gopal Street, Bohra gali, Cloth market, Rabindranath Tagore Marg and Sabji market. The Neemuch district has approximately 700,000 inhabitants as of 2001.
Tourism
here are many tourist places around Neemuch, most of which are religious. Notably, Bhadwamata (20 km), Bhanwarmata (25 km), Sukhanandji (20 km) (it is closer to Jawad), Sitaram Jaju Sagar-Harkiakhal Dam (20 km), Gandhisagar Dam (around 100 km), Chittor(60 km), and Udaipur (around 100 km). One of the main temples of Neemuch is Kileshwar which hosts yearly the Shivratri festival where thousands of devotees flock to the temple for the Darshan of lord Shiva.
Neemuch has a rich sporting history especially in soccer. Despite being a small town, Neemuch has produced a number of players who have played in the Indian soccer league. Neemuch has about 12 local soccer clubs which participate in the tournament organized by local municipal council every year. Cricket is also a very popular sport.
